They charge KRW 15,000 at the door of a market where you go to shop (2026 DDP Design Fair)

2026.10.01

Seoul City runs a design market on a KRW 2.5 billion contract, and it charges at the door again this year. Last autumn, 30,000 people bought tickets over five days, walked in, and picked out furniture and tableware.

1.From October 14 to 18, Seoul City and the Seoul Design Foundation will hold the 2026 DDP Design Fair across the entire Art Hall of Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). Some 80 Korean home and lifestyle brands set up booths, and visitors buy what they like on the spot. Admission is KRW 15,000 at full price, and tickets are sold only on 29CM, the curated online shop run by Musinsa. Until the 13th, the early-bird price is KRW 9,000.
2.The fair is the main event of Seoul Design Week, which runs from October 14 to 25. Last autumn, the first edition held with 29CM drew about 30,000 visitors in five days. Seoul City announced that 290,000 people passed through DDP over the same period, with the entry queue stretching to 500 m.

3.Last year an apartment complex went up in the middle of the hall. Inside the Art Hall, 29CM built a yellow-walled block called 29APT and fitted out four buildings, No. 129 through No. 429, as homes for different tastes. Visitors toured the rooms like a show unit, looking at furniture and bedding in each one.

4.This year the apartment becomes a market. The theme is "A Market Full of Taste." Borrowing from Dongdaemun Market, the hall is split into four zones: the Meticulous Homemaker's Market, the Quiet Dreamer's Market, the Cheerful Companion's Market and the Kind Gourmet's Market. The companion zone, for pet and kids' goods, is new this year, and 29CM says it reflects changing family structures.
5.The standard booth is white shelving and wooden display tables. Last year, one lighting booth lit a mushroom-shaped mood lamp in each of dozens of pastel cubbies, and a tableware booth laid white plates and bowls in neat rows on low wooden tables. Shoppers lift a bowl to feel its weight, switch a lamp on and off, press a cushion. Those few seconds, when something seen only on a screen lands in the hand, are what an online shop cannot replace, however good its photos are.

6.The exhibitor list includes alumni of the Seoul Design Startup Center and vendors of the DDP Design Store. For a small brand that cannot afford a department store counter, a five-day booth is a rare chance for customers to handle the product. Reviews from last year talk about finding new brands and coming away with ideas for decorating at home.

7.A shopping mall does not charge at the door. Yet here the tickets sell first. Seoul City said last year's early-bird tickets sold out in a day, and this August's limited batch at KRW 6,000, 60% off, is already gone. What people buy is not the right to shop but the experience of going to an event. Ticket holders come less to buy something than to discover something.

8.Last year's task specification, posted on KONEPS, the national procurement site, shows the contract budget. "Organization and Operation of Seoul Design Week and DDP Design Fair 2025," KRW 2.5 billion including VAT. It even sets the split among exhibitions, talks and side events, and promotion and operations, and nearly half goes to exhibitions.
9.How much of that do tickets cover? If this year's attendance matches last year's 30,000 and everyone pays the early-bird price, ticket revenue comes to KRW 270 million. Even at full price for all, it is KRW 450 million. That is 11-18% of the budget. How ticket revenue is divided between the foundation and 29CM has not been disclosed.
Even if every ticket sold at full price, it would not reach a fifth of the budget.
10.Run it the other way and you get the public money spent per visitor. The KRW 1.2 billion exhibition share divided by 30,000 fair visitors is KRW 40,000 a head. That figure also covers the Week's exhibitions, so the fair alone costs less, but a KRW 15,000 ticket clearly has more money than that standing behind it.
11.What 29CM takes home is customers more than ticket revenue. Tickets were sold only on 29CM, and last year's on-site prize entries went through the 29CM app. When a shopper later looks up in the app the bowl they held at a booth, that order also lands at 29CM. How much do brands pay to take part? No figure has come out yet.

12.The private sector has run this business for a long time. The Seoul Living Design Fair, organized by Design House, held its 31st edition in COEX Halls A-D this February and drew 230,000 people in five days. Admission was KRW 25,000. A private fair has to cover its costs from admission and booth fees and still turn a profit. The DDP Design Fair draws about an eighth of that crowd, but it starts with a budget already in place.
13.The task specification says that from 2025 Seoul Design Week would be restructured along the lines of the international design fairs in Milan and Paris. On October 18, Maria Porro, president of Salone del Mobile.Milano, speaks at the conference. Yet the Salone's real business is a trade fair that gathers overseas buyers and distributors. DDP's five days are closer to a market where citizens buy a ticket and go shopping.
14.The gap shows in the performance targets of the specification. The fair's quantitative goals were at least 70 participating brands and at least 15,000 on-site visitors over five days. Last year, visitors came in at twice the target. The document calls for B2B programs and live commerce, but buyer meetings and contract value are not among the targets. What gets measured is headcount.
15.There is also a slot that private fairs do not keep. This year, one side of the Art Hall hosts the Young Designer Special Hall, showing products that about 100 university design students in 20 teams made with companies. It is a slot that brings in no sales for now. At an event that has to fund itself from booth fees, this would be the first space to shrink.
16.Last year Seoul City opened a five-day market on a KRW 2.5 billion contract, and 30,000 people bought tickets, walked in and bought furniture and tableware. This year brands set up booths in the same Art Hall again. Even if every ticket sold at full price, it would not reach a fifth of the budget. Try the format without public money and booth fees are the first wall. Small brands cannot pay what a major trade fair charges for a booth, and KRW 15,000 at the door is not enough to make up the gap if booth fees come down.
